General Rabbit Care

Rabbit Introduction:     You are about to invest in a new rabbit.  They are quiet, peaceful animals that do not disturb the neighbors.  Rabbits are very intelligent animals, each with its own personality.  There are about 45 recognized breeds of rabbits that come in a variety of colors and sizes.  

     Before you buy that new rabbit, read books on rabbits and talk to breeders.  The more you know, the better for both of you.  The average lifespan of a rabbit is 7 years. 

Picking up and holding a rabbit:  Grab the rabbit by the loose skin and fur on the back of the rabbit’s neck area (behind the ears).  *Do Not pick up a Rex or Mini Rex rabbit that way, as it will ruin the fur.  Do not hold the rabbit by the fur without supporting the rest of its body.  Lift the rabbit up and place your hand under the rabbit’s bottom as you bring it close to you. Put the rabbit’s nose towards the bend in your arm and it will help to make it feel secure.  Never grab a rabbit by the paws or by its ears.  To pick up a Rex or Mini Rex rabbit simply place one hand under the bottom of the rabbit and the other under its chest and pick it up.  Hold it the same way you would any other rabbit, close to your body, so it will feel secure.
